Getting Real.

Hey Crew,

So so so much going on this week for you to check out. The snow reports are going crazy with nothing but good news and while the surf on the G.C. is basically non-existent, the sun has been shining and the days are getting a whole lot warmer. Summer is coming! I guess after the freezing cold winter we have had and last years less than average excuse for a brilliant Aussie summer, it’s about time!

With Summer on the way there are a few things that people need to keep in mind, especially surfers, beach goers and fisher-people (political correctness at its finest).  The beach is not just yours, or ours. The ocean is home to over a million species of aquatic wild life and plants and you know what, they were there FIRST! So before summer hits and People start screaming “Cull the Sharks” make a conscious effort to remember that the ocean is their home and that they are an incredibly necessary part of the food chain. It might not hurt to also realise that if you go in the ocean looking like a seal, you might look tasty to a shark.

I guess you are thinking “Woah, Anne’s on a rant.”, but actually, I’m not. I’ve just handed in a piece at UNI on Sustainability and my chosen subject matter was “Shark finning and Shark Culling”. This may not be something that you care about greatly and that’s ok, but its a tragic waste of life and it is disgraceful that while there were only 64 deaths from shark attacks last year, humans killed over 73 MILLION sharks.

Sustainability is something that we all need to take into account and be super aware of. Remembering that what brings us together at Broken Tree is our love of Surfing, Skating, Snowboarding and basically being outside, we need to preserve our environment as best we can. So just be aware when you take a plastic bag or leave the water on while brushing your teeth or what ever, that its not too hard to just not do these tiny little things that can make a difference.

Ok now onto some more fun and less serious matters. Pennywise are playing at Coolangatta Hotel tomorrow night. Our main man Leigh will be heading along and its promises to be a good time. DJ Chico is playing some rug-melting tunes at Blush in Surfers on Sunday and  there is talk of a dance off. Mermaid Beach Summer Surf Girl Jemma Gillam is hosting a BBQ, also on Sunday and would be delighted if you would come down to support a worthy cause and help her raise some much needed funds for the club. Details on where and when will be posted to the facebook page as soon as I have them and last of all keep your eyes and ears out for some shows and tunes by The Dreamkillers. Good music by good people.

More to come soon. Keep it real!

Peace and Love.

Anne xx
